The most senior water right which the Town
of Palisade owns is the Grapevine Ditch. The Town acquired
this water right by condemnation in 1911 and the water right
was transferred to an alternate point of diversion higher in the
basin, and changed from irrigation to municipal use on March
8, 1929. The new diversion points are a series of surface water
intakes and springs located throughout the watershed. Additional
filings for changes in points of diversion were made in 1968.

It should be noted that there have been additional filings (by
others) on the original Grapevine Ditch location. Thus, the
State Engineer's water right tabulation will list more than one
Grapevine Ditch water use; however, these obviously have a
lower priority. the Grapevine Ditch is now one of several
water rights referred to as the Palisade Pipeline.

2) Crawford Ditch The second oldest right is the Crawford Ditch,
which was purchased by Palisade in October, 1928. On March
8, 1929, the point of diversion for the Crawford Ditch water
right was changed to the series of alternate points of diversion.
The water right was also changed from irrigation to municipal at
that time. Additional filings for changes in points of diversion
were made in 1968.

In June, 1929, a new water right was fIled (by others) under
the name of the Martin Crawford Ditch. Its point of diversion
was the same point as the original Crawford Ditch. This water
right was also transferred to the upper basin, and is included
with the Palisade Pipeline.

3) Kmzen Springs Re.~ervoir Springs Ditch Vincent Reservoirs
These water rights, all of which are considered part of
Cottonwood Creek, were acquired by purchase from the Vincent
Ranch in 1951. (The Vincent Ranch is located at the base of
Grand Mesa in the Watson Creek drainage. Water from these
water rights was initially diverted from Cottonwood Creek over
to Watson Creek.) The Vincent Ranch was sold to Verne A.
Jones, who subsequently fIled for a water right on Cottonwood
Creek; however, this is a junior priority. Additional filings for
changes in points of diversion were made in 1968. The Vincent
Reservoir rights were considered abandoned in 1986; the Town
has refiled on these rights.

IV-9
