~

Need for the Project

The CEXT is undertaking this project to continue to provide
irrigation water to its shareholders to irrigate their crops.

In August of 1996, a break in the siphon occurred approximately
450 feet downstream of the siphon inlet structure. Initially
water could not be delivered to CEXT shareholders when flows fell
below 40 cfs in the ditch. At a flow of approximately 60 cfs,
only 20 - 25 cfs could be delivered through the siphon and this
got progressively worse during August and September. The siphon
finally totally "blew out" in early October. The siphon system
dates to around the turn of the century. Concrete repair work on
the outlet structure, which is in poor repair, indicates a
repair date of 1936. The siphon was originally constructed of 48
inch diameter wooden pipe, The length of the siphon is
approximately 1,000 feet. At least two major failures of the
siphon have occurred in the past. Repairs using various
materials were made when the siphon failed in 1942.
Approximately 400 feet on the inlet side of the siphon were
replaced with used 42 inch boiler pipe in 1955, The inlet
structure was also replaced in 1955.

i

2
