Alternative 6 - Water Wells.

Discussion. The wrights Mesa area overlies the
Dakota Sandstone, which can provide a moderate
amount of water to water wells. Production tends to
be spotty, since it depends upon hitting a series of
crevices. There may also be areas that were old
streambeds, and in which alluvium has been
deposited; these areas tend to have higher
production. A number of rural residences have
wells; most are in the 100 to 200 ft. range. A well
to supply Norwood should have a production of about
50 to 100 gpm consistently to be cost effective.
According to local residents, there is a band of
high well production about 200 yards wide running
from west to east near Norwood.

Four potential wells are shown on Figure V-B.
Estimated production based on verbal information
from owners is as follows:

Jack White well - 50 gpm
Old Town well - 0 to 100 gpm
Fitts wells (2) - 20 and 80 gpm each
pioneer Village well - no information

It appears that the maximum production that could be
expected from a well is 50 to 75 gpm.

The only way to verify the actual production of each
well is to test pump it over approximately a one
week period. The draw-down in adjoining wells and
recovery should be measured during the test.

Advantages of well water are: it is high quality
water and would be available in winter months.
Since it would not have to be connected to the water
treatment plant, it could be located almost
anywhere.

Disadvantages of a water well system are:

1. It is a separate source of water and
therefore, must be tested separately from the
main supply. Testing can be expensive.
2. All of the water from the well must be pumped.
3. It is another facility to maintain, i.e.,
a chlorinator must be checked daily.
4. It is difficult to predict the long term
reliable supply of a water well.
Occasionally, production tends to drop off
with long term pumping.

V-s
