Lilylands Reservoir and Canal system is
mostly located southwest of the service area, and
would not likely be a viable source of water.

5. J & M Hughes Ditch.

"Hughes Ditch" is a private ditch located southeast
of the service area. Although potential exists to
utilize the ditch as a conveyor of additional water
supply, required ditch improvements and lengthy
extensions would likely be cost prohibitive.

PREVIOUS STUDIES AND INFORMATION SOURCES.

Several studies have been prepared which have provided
useful information regarding water rights, ditches,
reservoirs, and water availability, and have been used
in the preparation of and are referenced in this report.

In 1989, Boyle Engineering Corporation evaluated the
feasibility of irrigation reservoirs and canals for the
San Miguel Water conservancy District. Western Engineers
of Grand Junction also prepared feasibility studies for
reservoirs in the area in the early 1980's.

Two other studies evaluated domestic water supplies. In
1975, Mesa Engineering performed a feasibility level study
sponsored by SMWCD for rural residents of Wrights Mesa.
That study investigated various alternatives of providing
water to the service area. A preliminary engineering
report entitled "Evaluation of Water Supply system" was
prepared by WestWater Engineering in November, 1991. This
is a comprehensive report which evaluated all facets of
the system, including raw water, water treatment, water
rights and distribution and storage.

Original design drawings were available for the 1978 and
1988 construction projects. The 1978 project included
the 10 MG Town Reservoir, the first phase of the water
treatment plant, two storage tanks and most of the
distribution system. The 1988 project involved an
upgrade of the water plant. Unfortunately, 'As Built'
drawings were either not prepared or not accurate. No
drawings were available for previous installations.
Thus, a considerable amount of information on existing
facilities was assembled from field observation, on-site
measurements, and from narrative accounts from people
who had worked on the system. There may be some
inaccuracies as a result.

II-5
