Clyde Consultants

3.0
LAND

3.1 LAND CLASSIFICATION

According to Colorado Water Conservation Board guidelines, presently irrigated lands
to be served by the project do not need to be classified. However, classification of the
project service area has been conducted by the Soil Conservation Service and this
information was reviewed and used to assist in determination of the project payment
capacity.

The project service area is located in eastern Larimer County and southern Weld County
and is in the area bounded by the Eaton Ditch and Greeley No.2 Ditch. The total area
encompassed between these boundaries is about 86,000 acres. Within these boundaries
the Windsor Reservoir and Canal Company provides water for irrigation of about55,000
acres.

The Soil Conservation Service Soil Surveys for Larimer and Weld counties were
reviewed for soil classification. The map units for the project service area and their
respective capability classifications are shown on Table 3-1. A majority of the service
area consists of the Olney and Otero units which are well drained sandy and/or clay
loams formed in alluvium and eolian deposits.

3.2 SERVICE AREA MAP

The project service area is shown on Figure 1-1. Because of the operational setup of the
Windsor Reservoir and Canal Company it is impossible to single out any particular land
packages which are served specifically by Douglas Reservoir water. The total Windsor
Reservoir and Canal Company irrigation system typically uses about 31,000 acre-feet of
water to supply about 25,000 acre-feet to irrigate approximately 55,000 acres of farm
land. Douglas Reservoir typically contributes about 4,600 acre-feet, or 15 percent, to the
system.

22539G/DOUGLAS.DAM 12.17.90/REPORTS3

12
