"tudv Pr' ess

Work on he San Miguel Project study started in October 1986. In the first phase of the study, several
alternative project systems were formulated to provide a range of potentially viable project concepts, The water
yields and costs of these alternative project configurations were comparatively evaluated at a reconnaissance
level of ef . rt. The reconnaissance level of effort is intended to provide a preliminary, conceptual analysis to
distinguislthe major differences between alternatives and provide a preliminary indication of feasibility for
each alter ative. Assessments were made of the water availability and the water needs in the project areas.
Institution I factors, payment capacity of potential crops, and financing options were also considered. The
results of t e first phase of the study is presented in this Interim Report.

Based on hese analyses, a decision will be made at the end of Phase One whether to proceed further with
project pIa ning. If the decision is made to proceed to Phase Two of the study, one of the alternatives will be
selected fo detailed feasibility-level analysis.

A decisio period of about six weeks is proposed from early February to mid-March 1988, following
distributio of this Interim Report, to allow the study participants to decide whether to proceed and, if so, to
indicate th alternative to be evaluated in Phase Two. The work of Phase Two would begin in about April of
1988 and' ould require 5 months.

Public In rmation Proaram

The publiinformation program of the study has included newsletters and technical review sessions with the
study advi ors in the project area to keep interested parties informed on the progress of the study. Eight
technical r view sessions were held in the San Miguel Project area between January 1986 and December 1987.
Two newsl tters have been distributed to date and a public meeting to discuss the Phase One study results will
be held in he study area in February 1988.

Renort 0 ."anlzatlon

This Interiin Report is intended to provide the reader with a concise summary of the results of Phase One of
the study nd to assist the study participants in making a decision with regard to Phase Two of the study, The
report is 0 ganized as follows:

1-3

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
1
