I

I

I

ENGINEERING AND FEASIBILITY REPORT
WANEKA RESERVOIR DAM

I

I
I I

SYNOPSIS

I

This report presents the results of a detailed engineering and feasibility

study for the Waneka Reservoir Dam prepared by Water Resources Consultants, Inc.

(WRC) under contract with the Henry Waneka Mutual Reservoir Company (HWMRC).

The Waneka Reservoir Dam is located in the western part of Lafayette and is the

only existing raw water storage facility for the City of Lafayette and HWMRC.

The reservoir is expected to playa major role in maximizing the yield of the

City's water rights, preserve the historic irrigation consumptive use levels, and

increase the consumptive use from the use of additional supplies captured during

high runoff periods.

I

II

I

The purpose of the report can be summarized as follows:

I

I - Perform a detailed evaluation of the existing embankment and structures
to determine capacity and stability.

I

2 - Develop alternatives for improvements to the dam and appurtenant
structures to increase storage capacity.

I

3 - Evaluate the economic feasibility of the selected alternatives and

develop a financial program that demonstrates the feasibility.

I

I
I

The dam and reservoir are owned by the Henry Waneka Mutual Reservoir

Company with the City of Lafayette being the major stockholder. The water is

used for irrigation and municipal/industrial purposes. The dam was originally

constructed around 1900 and has been enlarged to the present capacity in separate

occasions. The structure was originally owned by the Northern Colorado Power

Company but was conveyed to the HWMRC on September 30, 1959 when the reservoir

company was organized as a non-profit corporation.

I
I
I

-2-
