I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

water supply as compared to other water in the nearby area. It
does, however, have fluorides and total solids in excess of the
Department of Health Standards. The Fox Hills aquifer is a closed
basin and, therefore, the amount of water available from the basin
is limited and closely controlled by a groundwater management
district. The aquifer itself is a dense aquifer which does not
yield water readily. Water wells in the Fox Hills sands typically
have low capacity and high pumping head requirements. This makes
the deep well supply somewhat costly to operate and maintain.

The active three wells serving Keenesburg are located in the Town
and have the discharge piping connected directly to the distribution
system. The only treatment occurring is chlorination of the water
at the well head. Much of the existing distribution system is
old and undersized and should be replaced. There is a need for
additional lines to loop the system in order to eliminate many
dead end lines and to provide for adequate domestic and fire flow
throughout the Town.

The existing storage for the Town consists of a 25,000-ga1lon
steel storage tank constructed in 1951, and a 200,000-gal10n steel
storage tank constructed in 1971. The storage tanks are located
to the north of the Town. The tanks are groundwater storage tanks
providing limited pressure to the users. They are inadequate to
meet the Town's storage needs for equalizing, emergency, and fire
flow requirements.

c.

WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS

Water system improvements have been proposed for the major components
of the system, including storage, distribution, and supply.

Storage improvements proposed include a new 200,QOQ-gal1on storage
tank located southwest of the Town.
