....~

additional chlorine on the treated water side of the plant. The in-

jection of the chlorine prior to the filtering of water would assist

in the filtration. The other improvement which could be made to the

plant, and which should be seriously considered, would be the addition

of more body feed solution into the system during periods of high tur-

bidity. Using the present body feed pumps, the most body feed solution

that can be put into the filtering system at this time is 4.79 pounds

of diatomaceous earth per 100 gallons of water in the body feed tank.

If this concentration of diatomaceous earth could be increased to 24

pounds per 100 gallons of water in the body feed tank during times of

high turbidity, the filtration cycle prior to backwashing would be ex-

tended. This would decrease the amount of treated water required for

backwashing. The plant is designed to use 2,000 gallons of treated

water in every backwash cycle, but during the backwash cycle not only

is the plant using treated water, but one filter is off the system,

thereby decreasing the capacity of treated water the plant can put into

the town's system.

Another problem experienced at the treatment plant is that on

occasion, the precoat pump and the body feed pump will become plugged

with diatomaceous earth and not function properly. The plugging of

these pumps with diatomaceous earth solution can be overcome by in-

stalling an automatic flush device in the pumps. The installation of

this automatic flush device is relatively simple and involves the in-

stallation of a water flush valve on the suction side of the pumps.

Then, every few seconds a pulse of water will be passed through the

system to keep the heavy diatomite from settling out and clogging the

pumps. The problem of insects and other objects entering the pumps

can be corrected by placing fine mesh screens over the body feed and

precoat tanks.

.

"

.

- 46 -
