Project lands

Class 6w Irrigated

These nonirrigable lands, totaling 5,975 acres, have water
rights and are presently irrigated; however, they do not meet the
minimum re~uirements for irrigable land specified in Bureau of
Reclamation standards. They are dispersed ~uite evenly throughout
the project area. They are of low ~uality due to extremely shallow
soils which are underlain by shale, high concentrations of salinity
or alkalinity, high water tables, or a combination of two or more
of these limitations. Continued irrigation of 6w lands will
increase the hazard of waterlogging with a corresponding buildup
of salinity and alkalinity. Furthermore, the quality of the return
flow water from these lands increases the salinity hazard to higher
~uality lands on which the return flows are reused for irrigation,
The irrigation plan for the project encompasses abandonment of
irrigation on class Ew lands and transfer of their water rights to
higher ~uality lands,

Class 6 Nonirrigated

,"}'-

There are 34,705 acres of nonirrigated lands within the
district boundries which do not meet the minimum re~uirements for
irrigable lands. These lands are presently dry-farmed or are in
native grass, and they occur in large tracts on the uplands and
in the bottomlands. Smaller tracts occur along the edges of the
terraces. The class 6 lands are comprised of steep, rough and
broken slopes, fairly level areas having shallow, compacted clay
soils overlying shale, gravel, or sandstone, areas with very high
water tables, and lands which have highlY saline and alkaline
soils. Included also in the class 6 lands are 3,974 acres of
rights-of-way for roads, irrigation facilities, etc.

'-.'

35
