Project lands

Class 2 Irrigable

Limitations of potential productivity under average management
or somewhat higher development costs resulted in 12,510 acres or 64
percent of the irrigable area being placed in class 2. Class 2 lands
have a composite productivity index of 81,5 percent. To achieve
maximum efficiency in water utilization, development work costing
an average of $20 an acre will be required.

Of the total class 2 lands, 12,118 acres have moderately low
potential productivity, For these lands, only minimum costs averaging
about $16 per acre will be required for development works, but yields
are expected to be lower because of several limitations. These
limitations and acreages affected are shown in the following
tabulation:

~

Type of limitation

Severity of limitation

10,501

Topsoil and/or subsoil are
heavy clay loam or very
permeable clay
2 to 4 percent slopes
Minor flooding about 1 year
in 5
Water table is 5 to 10 feet
below surface
0.2 to 0.4 percent total
soluble salts

Fine textured soils

1,044
83

Gradient topography
Subject to flooding

125
425

Subsurface drainage

Saline soils

12,lT8

Other lands totaling 392 acres were placed in class 2 because
of relatively high development costs which were estimated to average
$140 per acre, The productivity of these lands will approach that
of class 1 lands: but due to pronounced undulations, higher costs
of leveling will be required than for class 1 lands.

Class 3 Irrigable

Lands totaling 5,992 acres, or 30 percent of the irrigable
area, were assigned to class 3. These lands have an estimated
composite productivity index of 11.2, and an average development
cost of $20 per acre, Their limitations result from about the
same type of physical conditions as those pertaining to class 2
lands, but are more severe. Consequently, the class 3 lands are
more marginal for irrigation,

34

I

I
i
