.
,

.

_~~! Two
Rev_iew and__Evaluation
of Exis~~ng Water .systenJ
HISTORY OF THE WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS
In 1904, the town organized a water system and began selling water
taps. On February 25, 1907, the town of Hotchkiss began constructing
its first city owned water supply system by building an 8 mile long
clay-tile pipeline to bring high quality Leroux Creek water to
the town. (Map No. I in the back of th i s report wi 11 he I p the
reader follow the description more easily.) In the early days,
water could be diverted into this low head delivery line either
directly, by diverting out of Leroux Creek,or by diverting out
of the High Line Oitch whe(e the town presently diverts its water.

,

The original water supply system included a circular concrete lined

reservoir located just west of the town's present 400,000 gallon

water tank. For many years, the system has had a settling pond

located about a mile above the storage reservoir. This single

cell settling pond, used to regulate flow and settle out sediment,

was redesigned and enlarged by L. O. Morrill in 1948. The settling

pond originally held 2,700,000 gallons (8.3 acre feet) but has

been reduced in volume because the accumulated sediment has not

been removed.

In 1953, the town installed the present pressure filter system.
This filter, described later in this report, was designed by
Stanley L. Oodson.

In 1962
fad 1 i ty
designed

Hotchkiss abandoned its open air clear water storage

and constructed a 400,000 gallon steel reservoir that was

by Morcan Engineering Company.

Since the construction of the storage tank, there have been no

major improvements to the water system. Within the last 3 years

.
