1-5

~

<

134 females). The median age for Delta County was 40.6, which is
the highest for all counties in Colorado.

In 1974, the Colorado Division of Planning estimated the population
growth pattern for various portions of the state through 1980. The
following discussion is based on the Summary Report entitled
"Colorado Regional and County Population Estimates - - 1970-1980".
Growth estimates for Region 10 (Delta, Montrose, San Miguel,
Ouray, Hinsdale and Gunnison Counties) are given for four different
growth assumptions. Table 1-1 presents a summary of the state's
projections for total population, number of employed, and school
age population for Region 10.

.

The "low series" estimates are based on a mildly pessimistic future
for the economy of the state as a whole. For example, it assumes
that for each year from 1974 through 1980, an increase of only
300 people in the state will be added to the agricultural industry,
and 400 to the mineral extraction industry. The "high series"
assumes that 900 will be added to agriculture each year, and 1,400
added to the mineral industry each year. The state assumes that
the "high series" is probably the upper limit of growth, excluding
significant impacts.

The state has also developed an "impact series" of population
estimates. This series is based on the assumption that there
will be a major industrial development in the area, such as major
expansion of the coal industry. For Region 10, the State assumes
that the impact will begin in 1978 with the influx of 7,000
additional workers.

Recent population estimates provided by Delta County to the

:
