.
~

Project Summary

.
.

PROJECT SUMMARY
INTRODUCTION

The criticism of the Hotchkiss water system by the Colorado Department of

Health, coupled with the relatively poor fire flow capabilities of the Hotch-

kiss municipal water system, has resulted in the current evaluation survey

and this attached report. This water supply master plan report for the Town

of Hotchkiss, Colorado lays out a phased plan on water system improvementS

ranging from the head gate on Leroux Creek to the distribution system. The

over all master plan is divided into three phases which are in turn directly
re 1 ated to a number of water system customers. The first phase of the water
system improvements is based upon a no-g rowth condition, i.e. , improvements

are identified which are necessary to serve the present customers. The re-

sulting financial program also relates to a no-growth condition for Phase I.

,

.

GENERAL
The Town of Hotchkiss is situated at the confluence of the North Fork Gunni-
son River and Leroux Creek in Delta County. Hotchkiss is in Township 14S,
R92 and 93W of the 6th P.M., some 20 miles east of Delta and 12 miles north
of Crawford. The study area is in an agricultural region which has a high
potential for energy impact resulting from coal development.

Hotchkiss is at an elevation almost identical to Denver, Colorado, 5350 feet.
Its mean annual temperature is 490F and its average precipitation is 13.5 inches.

EXISTING WATER SYSTEM

The municipal water system was mostly constructed shortly after the turn of

the century. Raw water is diverted from Leroux Creek at the Highline Ditch

headgate and a long cross country pipeline transports the raw water to a

settling pond north of the Town. Water is then piped southerly by gravity

to the water treatment plant situated about 300 feet in elevation above the

business district.

:.

A 400,000 gallon steel tank provides clear water storage capacity and gravity
pressure to the distribution system which has a majority of 4-inch and 6-inch
pipel ines.

,
