<br />WORKS OF IMPROVEMENT TO BE INSTAllED <br /> <br />land Treatment <br /> <br />land treatment measures shown in Table I include those which are needed <br />and can be applied during the five-year installation period. These <br />measures will provide watershed protection and project benefits through <br />improved land and cover conditions. ' <br /> <br />landowners and operators in the watershed with technical and/or finan- <br />cial assistance from the Sedgwick County Soil Conservation District in <br />Colorado; the South Platte 'Natural Resources District in Nebraska, the <br />Great Plains Conservation Program and the Rural Environmental Assistance <br />Program have applied land treatment measures 1 isted in Table IA to <br />reduce runoff and erosion through improved condition of the watershed <br />land. ' <br /> <br />Conservation and Great Plains Conservation Plans developed by landowners <br />and operators with assistance from the sponsoring districts will desig- <br />nate land treatment measures needed on each farm and ranch unit. Techni- <br />cal assistance is available from the Soil Conservation Service through <br />the districts for these measures. Information and assistance wi 1'1 be <br />provided landowners and operators regarding optimum appl ication of <br />fertilizers and use of pesticides through the Soil Conservation Oistricts. <br />Technical forestry assistance will be provide~ to interest~d l~ndowne+s_ <br />by the Nebraska State Extension Forester and/or the Colorado State <br />Fores te r. <br /> <br />Creation of windbreak and wildlife food and protective plantings will be <br />encouraged on farms and ranches through conservation plans developed and <br />revised with owners and operators, Colorado Division of Wildlife, Soil <br />Conservation Service, Soil Conservation and Natural Resources Districts. <br /> <br />Measures'to be applied on the irrigated land include conservation cropp- <br />ing system, crop residue management, irrigation ditch and canal lining, <br />irrigation pipelines, irrigation land leveling, irrigation water manage- <br />men't, structures for water control and ponds and shelterbeltplantings. <br /> <br />Measures to be applied on the nonirrigated land include conservation <br />cropping system, crop residue management and terraces. Measures to be <br />applied on rangeland include planned grazing systems, range seeding, <br />windbreak and shelterbelt plantings and ponds. <br /> <br />Floodway I between Station 231+20 and the South ~latte River crosses the <br />Sedgwick ~ar State Wildlife Area. Plantings of switch, alkal i sacaton <br />and western wheatgrasses, and of Russian olive, Juniper, skunkbush and <br />sumac shrubs will be made in this area.
