Alternative No. 3 - Reinforced Concrete Pipe

Reinforced concrete pipe has not been used much in the Colorado Area. The main

reason for this has been the initial cost. It is about twice as expensive to

lay pipe than to install concrete lining. But because of the ever increasing

costs associated with farming, this initiali cost may be justified. Reinforced

concrete pipe has as estimated one hundred ,(100) year life span. We have found

that the cost of maintenance of pipe is abo~t the same as concrete lined ditch

or about $20,000 a year. The cost includes' all expenses. Some money can be

saved on installation of the pipe because the base and side walls do not have

to be as precisely groomed and compacted as with a concrete lined ditch.

The estimated rehabilitation cost of Alterniltive No,., 3 is $4,657,350. The unit
costs of construction are the same as concr~te line ditch except for the following
items:
1. Reinforced concrete pipe - $70 per,L.F. this price is based on
60 inch diameter pipe (see capacity next page)
2. Imported Base Coarse - $5.00 cu. yd.
3. Stripping Embankments - .25 sq. ft\
4. Inlet cleaners - $1,000 ea.
If the entire ditch were to be rehabilitated using reinforced concrete pipe, we
estimate the costs to be as follows:
1. Clean Vegetation
2
700,000 sq/ ft. at .25 per ft = $175,000
2. Excavate Existing Ditch Bottom to Grade

$5.00 L.F. x 58,000 L.F.

= $290 000
, '

3. Percompact base
3
4,300 cu. yds.at $4.50 yd = $' 19,350
4. Prepare six (6) inches of imported sub base
8,600 cu. yds. at $5.00 yd3 = $:43,000
5. Construct Pipeline
58,000 feet at $70 per L.F. =$4,060,000
6. Backfill and Compact
20,000 cu. yds. at 3.50 cu. yd.= $ 70,000
7. Install one (1) cleaner
TOTAL ESTIMATED COST $4,657.350

31

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
