The numerous plans to utilize the

.

unique Stagecoach Darn site have sought to develop the Project to

varying degrees as a supply of water for irrigation, stock, domes-

tic, municipal, industrial and recreational uses with the emphasis

.

on the primary water uses changing with the ownership of the land

and water rights.

Stagecoach Reservoir (formerly Bear Reservoir) was originally

.

conceived as a part of the Upper Yampa Project proposed by the U.S.

Bureau of Reclamation during the 1950's and 1960's. The reservoir

.

was to be an 11,614 acre-foot supply of supplemental water for late

season irrigation of the lands under the proposed wessels Canal.

The Stagecoach Reservoir site and water rights were acquired in the

.

early 1970's by a group of land developers interested in the recre-

ational aspects of a larger Stagecoach Reservoir with a total

capacity of 33,719 acre-feet, the size of the current Project.
