<br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />IJ <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The soils tested during our laboratory study were de- <br /> <br />livered to our laboratory by Mr. Leroy Black. <br /> <br />The soil strength <br /> <br />characteristics used in our analyses were determined for <br /> <br />s~turated conditions on remolded samples. <br /> <br />Saturation is tlle <br /> <br />condition whe_n the soils will be at their weakest state and the <br /> <br />~ore pressure will be greatest. <br /> <br />The samples tested were re- <br /> <br />molded to about 98 percent of the maximum dry density defined <br /> <br />by ASTM D698 standard Proctor, as requested by Mr. Black. <br /> <br />CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS <br /> <br />Based on our laboratory tept results of the material <br /> <br />delivered ~o our laboratory, on our stability analysis and on <br /> <br />our understanding of the proposed construction, we anticipate <br /> <br />that the calculated factor of s~fety for the stability of the <br /> <br />shallow fill will be about 1.8. <br /> <br />This factor of safety assumes <br /> <br />that the existing slope is at an inclination of at least 2 <br /> <br />horizontal to 1 vertical and that the slope will be flattened <br /> <br />by placing compacted fill to an inclination of at least 2.5 <br /> <br />horizontal to 1 vertical. <br /> <br />We suggest that the compacted fill be constructed such that <br /> <br />the fill is keyed into the existing material at the toe at <br /> <br />least six (6) feet into competent material and benched into <br /> <br />competent existing embankment material at least three (3) <br /> <br />feet. <br /> <br />A toe drain should be constructed at the back of the <br /> <br />toe key. <br /> <br />The toe drain should consist of a three (3) or four (4) <br /> <br />-4- <br />~185l31GE <br /> <br />1Lalllbrrt anb g,6',6'odate,6' <br /> <br />CONSUL TI...G GEOTECHHIC-'l EHGINEERS AND <br />MATERIAL TiSTlNG <br />
