I

I

SECTION 02219

I

manufactured by Black, Sivals and Bryson, Inc., Kansas
City, Mo., with rupture di~CS suitable for between 50 and
75 psi rupturing pressure.

I

-. Tamping feet. At least one tamping foot shall be
provided for each 100 square inches of drum surface. l"he
space measured on the surface of the drum, between the
centers of any two adjacent tamping feet, shall be not
less than 9 inches. The length of each tamping foot from
the outside surface of 'the drum shall be not more than 11
inches and shall be maintained at not less than 9 inches.
The cross sectional area of each tamping foot shall be not
mor-e than 10 square inches at a plane normal to the axis
of the shank 6 inches from the drum surface, and shall be
maintained at not less than 7 square inches nor more than
10 square inches at a plane normal to the axis of the
shank 8 inches from the drum surface.

I

I

I

I

~. Roller weight.
loaded shall be not
length of drum.

The weight of a roller when fully
less than 4,000 pounds per foot of

I

4. Rollers shall be drawn by crawler-type or rubber-tired
tractors. The use of rubber-tired tractors shall be
discontinued if the tires leave ruts that prevent uniform
compaction by the tamping roller. Tractors used for
pulling rollers shall have .ufficient power to pull the
rollers satisfactorly when drums are fully loaded.

I

I

5. At the option of the contractor, selfpropelled tamping
r"ollers conforming with the above requirements may be used
in lieu of tractor-drawn tamping rollers. For
selfpropelled rollers, in which steering is accomplished
through the use of rubber-tired wheels, the tire pressure
shall not exceed 40 psi. During the operation of rolling,
the spaces between the tamping feet shall be maintained
clear of materials which would impair the effectiveness of
the tamping rollers.

I

I

I

I

E. Compaction. When each layer of material has been
conditioned to have the specified moisture, it shall be
compacted by passing the tamping roller over it 12 times,
and when compacted the density shall be essentially
uniform throughout the layer. If the uncompacted
earthfill material is too wet for proper compaction, the
earthfill material shall be worked with harrow, scarifier,
or other suitable equipment to ruduce the moisture content
to the amount specified; shall be allowed to dry until
such time as the material contains only the specified
moisture content; or the material shall be removed from
the embankment. Compacted earth material having a
moisture content or dry density that do not meet the
criteria specified above shall be reworked and rerolled,
as directed by the Engineer to obtain the specified
moisture content and dry density of embankment in place.

I

I

I

I

39
