Location
The location of the proposed Yamcolo Reservoir is shown
on the location and service area maps, Fiqure 1. Th site is
approximately 42 miles by road 5outhwest of the Steamboat
Springs and about 12 miles southwest of Yampa, Colorado. The
dam will be built in the northwest corner cf Garfield County
near the Routt-Garfield County line on the Yampa (or Bear)
River. The elevation at the dam site is approximately 9,500
feet.
The town of Yampa, at an elevation of 7,900 feet, is the
lowest point in the irrigation portion of the project, lying
at the foot of the first terrace down which the river runs,
and somewhat lower than the lands on P7atson and Hunt Creeks.
The valley is quite shallow as the slope of the Park Range to
the east rises gently some 2,000 feet to a crest about 4 miles
away. The mesas on the west rise even more gradually to the
foot of the talus slopes of the lava plateau which are 10 miles
distant. To the south, a divide about 100 feet high separates
the valley from the saucer-like Egeria Fark.
Climate
The climate: of the area is characterized by long severe
winters and relatively short, mild summers. P4ountains surround-
ing the area afford some protection from temperature extremes
exnerienced at some lower points lower in the Yampa Val.ley.
Maximum daily summer temperatures range from 70 to 90 degrees
and minimums range from 35 to 50 degrees. PaYles 1 and 2
indicate average climatic conditions at Yampa and Streamboat
Springs. It will be noted that although the elevation of Yampa
is considerably higher than Steamboat, the average growing season
is longer and temperature extremes are less.
I - 2
 '

,
'
'
'
'
 '
i '
I
 1 i
I '
I
'
i '
1
'
1
'

'
1
I '
