Originally, the reservoir
at the so-called Yamcolo site oas considered only for supplying
irrigation needs in the Toponas-Yampa Phippsburg area. Now the
project has been broadened to include water for industrial and
municipal uses throughout the Upper Yampa Valley between the
towns of Yamoa and Hayden; regulation and augmentation of minimum
stream flows for enhancement of water quality, recreation, and
other in-stream benefits, and also to provide regulation and
supplemental water for ranches in the Yampa area.
The only structural feature of the project is the reservoir
at the Yamcolo site. All project purposes will be accomplished
by regulation of releases from this reservoir and the utilization
of ditches and diversion structures along the course of the river
which are already in existence.
Location
The upper valley of the Yampa River in the Southern end of
Routt County, Colorado,is a shallow depression between the hite
River Plateau lying south and west and the western slope of the
Park Range which lies to the east. It is about 100 miles west and
25 miles north of Denver. The iThite River Plateau, locally called
the Flat Tops because of the nearly horizontal layers of basaltic
lava which cover the regular sedimentary formation of the country
is a table land lying at about 12,000 feet elevation. Below the
lava rim of this plateau the country slopes away on all sides to
form lower but broken mesas with fairly large valleys on some of
the streams, such as that of the Upper Yampa River.
I - 1
