.

crucial to deliver storage water later in the irrigation season
along with the pumping of groundwater to finish irrigating these
crops. Since groundwater levels within the unconfined aquifer in
the Closed Basin are dropping, the amount of recharge which is
dependent on direct flow and storage diversions from the Rio Grande
is also critical.
Without considering the use of groundwater, it is apparent from
tables 9 and 10 that the yield of the direct flow and storage water
rights of the SLVID varies considerably from year to year. The year
1977 represents the dryest year of record within the last 50 years.
During 1977, direct flow diversions amounted to 7,718 acre-feet and
storage diversions amounted to 3,474 acre-feet for a combined diver-
sion of 11,192 acre-feet. These diversions are representative of a
dry year yield or "safe yield."

.

.

-33-
