I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The purpose of this report is to determine the engineering feasibility of

enlarging the Elkhead Creek Dam and Reservoir for providing emergency water

storage for a downstream steam power plant operation. The Elkhead Creek

Dam Project was originally planned by Colorado Division of Wildlife,
formerly the Division of Game, Fish and Parks, for fish propogation,

recreation, wildlife habitat and production of fur bearing mammals, and

was scheduled for construction starting in the latter part of 1972.

Designated as the Yampa Project, the proposed steam power plant is planned at

a site along the Yampa River several miles downstream from the town of Craig.

On a basis of common interests, a view has been shared by concerned parties

that an increase in the size and capacity of the Elkhead Creek Dam and

Reservoir would be beneficial to both the state public and Yampa Project.

This report has been prepared to present the potential feasibility of increasing

the reservoir capacity to meet the storage requirement of the Yampa Project.

It includes the results from review of the original design, study and eval-

uation of hydrological, geological and topographical information pertinent

to the expansion of construction and also the additional project cost.

iii
