I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

CHAPTER I

GENERAL INFORMATION

Location

The Kelton Heights Water District is located within the City of
Lakewood, Colorado in Jefferson County. The eastern bounderies of the
District and the City of Lakewood are synonymous and border the
western limits of the City of Denver, Colorado. The District is
approximately located within the SE ~4 of Section 13 and the NE 1/4 of
Section 24, Township 4 South, Range,6g West of the 6th Prime
Meridian. The present District consists of 140 acres of gently
roll ing terrain and has an average elevation of 5,435 feet above mean
sea level (See Location Map).

Cl imate

The Kelton Heights area climate is ~uch the same as the Denver area
and that of the central Rocky Mount~in Region. It is a semiarid cli-
mate modified by the Rocky MountainS to the west. The humidity is
generally quite low and extreme hot or cold weather does not usually
last long. Normal monthly temperatures and precipitation data are
available from a monthly weather recording station in Lakewood,
located approximately 5 miles northwest of Kelton Heights. However,
long term data for maximum and minimum temperatures and length of
frost free periods are not available. Data on temperature extremes
and frost free periods are given fof the Denver weather record station
at Stapleton Airport located approximately 9 miles east-northeast of
Kelton Heights. All weather data is referenced and given in Tables 1
and 2.

Severe thunderstorms often occur during spring and su~ner. sometimes
bringing damaging hail and occasionally cause flash flooding.
Tornadoes hardly ever occur in this mountainous area. Heavy winter
blizzards are less frequent than areas to the east and are usually not
of long duration.

3
