I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

.

Ground Water (Alluvial Wells)

Alluvial wells, which tap Colorado River water through the alluvium, is

possible, but data obtained during this study indicated low permeabilities.
It is insufficient, however, to conclude that diversion through the river

alluvium is not feasible. The river alluvium hydraulic characteristics can

vary from one location to another. Field investigation beyond the scope of

this report is necessary to determine if a suitable location exists. In

many areas near Fruita. these alluvium may contain water of poor quality.

Colorado River
There is ample quantity of Colorado River water but during the major part of
the year, the water is of questionable quality for a water supply. U.S.G.S.
Water Quality data from the gaging station at the Colorado Utah state line
indicates that the water is very hard, high in dissolved solids, contains
selinuim, is high in total organic carbons and is high in manganese. Treat-
ment can reduce the hardness, manganese and total organic carbons but the water
will still be high in dissolved solids, sulfates and contain selinium. To
reduce total dissolved solids, selenium and sulfates by treatment, sophisticated
process such as electrodialysis or reverse osmosis must be used. The process
is very expensive and troublesome to operate and are not in general use in
this country for plants larger than 50 to 100 gallons per minute.

Water quality data should be obtained from the Colorado River at Fruita to
verify the available data used in this report. To improve the quality of
the Colorado River water, consideration should be given to the continued
use of the Pinion Mesa water and blend them with the Colorado River waters.
The degree of blending would be variable and depend on the quality of the
Colorado River water, which will be at its poorest quality during low flow
periods when City demands will be the highest.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The existing 8-inch treated water transmission main is of inadequate size
and should be replaced with a 14-inch pipeline.

-4-
