.'

.

.

Create baseflows using the variable efficiency and soil moisture accounting options following the
steps outlined in the CRDSS Phase DIb memoranda describing the creation of baseflows for use
in subsequent StateMod simulations for the period 1909 through 2000. This procedure is,
briefly, as follows:

L Run the Gunnison Basin Model to create baseflows when streamflow records are available.
l, Use the Mixed Station Model to fill missing baseflows.
3. Run StateMod to determine baseflows at ungaged locations based on area/precipitation
proration.
4. Check the Log File for errors and warnings.

Task 5.3 Simulate Historic and Calculated Scenarios using Variable Efficiency and Soil Moisture
Accouuting
Simulate the Historic and Calculated Monthly Gunnison data sets using StateMod with the variable
efficiency and soil moisture accounting options set to "on" using the input files defined in the
response file, as described in Task 5.1, including the baseflow file generated in Task 5.2. Check the
Log File for errors and warnings.

Task 5.4 Compare Historic and Calculated Sceuario Results to Previous Results and Historic
Measurements
Compare the results of the enhanced StateMod simulations using variable efficiency and soil
moisture accounting to previous Gunnison River Basin results and to historic measurements to
determine the effect the enhancements have made on calibration for both the historic and
calculated simulations. The comparisons will concentrate on the recent period beginning in
1976. Overall basin average simulated streamflows, diversions, reservoir end.of.month contents,
and consumptive use will be compared to previous CRDSS efforts, measured data, and results
from the StateCU historic consumptive use analysis. Monthly comparisons will be made of the
streamgages, diversion structures, and reservoirs highlighted in the previous CRDSS Gunnison
River Basin calibration efforts. In addition, simulated and measured results will be compared for
a representative wet and dry year.

The results of the comparison will be documented in a technical memorandum that will include
up to 15 figures that present comparative results in graphical form. The memorandum should
include recommendations for proceeding with Task 5.5, Perform Additional Model Calibration.

Task 5.5 Perform Additional Model Calibration
Perform additional calibration on the enhanced Gunnison River basin Model focusing of the
period from 1975 through 2000. The calibration task is limited to 160 hours(Erin, enough
hours?), and will likely focus on the following:

. Maximum Efficiencies. Maximum efficiencies will be investigated at basin and sub-basin
levels through discussions with local water groups and through sensitivity analyses by
varying maximum efficiencies to understand the effects on calibration.
. Return Flow Locations. Additional investigation on return flow locations will be conducted
in an effort to reduce diversion shortages and enhance streamgage calibration.
. Distribution of Baseflow Gains. Additional investigation will be conducted to distribute
baseflows appropriately to reduce diversion shortages and enhance streamgage calibration.
. Aggregate Structures. The location of lands aggregated together will be reviewed to
determine if a more appropriate or smaller grouping should be considered.
