A site reconnaissance to field check the results of the
air-photo analysis. aaulage routes from borrow areas
to the dam site will also be checked during the site
reconnaissance.

f. Reevaluation of existing geotechnical data such as soil
%ample descriptions, field and laboratory test results
and geophysical logs to assess conditions of the
foundation and abutment soil and rock.

Task 5 - Preliminary Dam and Spillway Design

The general approach for the dam and spillway design
studies will be to investigate alternative earth embankment
types, sections, spillways and alignments for a range of
alternative heights. Preliminary assumptions as to topographic
limitations and reservoir storage requirements will be made in
consultation with the CWCB to allow the first alternative design
studies to be made. The design studies will then progress toward
their final configuration as the results of the reservoir studies
(TaSk 6) are integrated into the dam design analysis.

The spillway design studies will be of particular
importance because of the size of the design flood, the
opportunity for trade-offs between reservoir surcharge storage
and spillway size and potential problems in the spillway
foundation.

The work for this task will include the following:

a. Dam alignment evaluations will concentrate primarily on
the previously studied location approximately 2.5 miles
upstream of the Rive~side Reservoir ("Weld County
Site") with' three possible axis alignments. This
location will be consioered fixed for reservoir sizes
of approximately 1,000,000 acre-feet. Should optimum
reservoir sizing indic~te a smaller reservoir, a brief
evaluation of alternative sites will be conducted.
Axis alignment will be selected based on economic and
engineering considerations of material availability and
foundation conditions ~s defined by Task 4. The final
decision on the dam location and axis alignment will be
made in consultation w:lth and subject to CWCB
approval.

b. The primary emphasis ot the preliminary design work is
identification of major facility components and
quantities in meeting current design standards and the
requirements of the Colorado State Engineer's office.
The level of accuracy ~ill be controlled by available
topographic information, the available materials and
foundations, and other readily available information.

-4-
