The two major streams <br /> <br />t <br /> <br />in the area are the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan Rivers, the confluence <br /> <br />of which is located in the southeastern part of the town. The Fryingpan <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />flows generally westward from the Continental Divide through Ruedi <br /> <br />Reservoir to Basalt. The Roaring Fork flows generally northwest to <br /> <br />where it joins the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs. Other towns <br /> <br />in the area include Aspen to the south, a well-known resort and tourist- <br /> <br />oriented community, and Glenwood Springs to the'northwest, the present <br /> <br />business center for the area. Carbondale, midway between Basalt and <br /> <br />Glenwood Springs, is predominantly a ranching and mining community. <br /> <br />Many of the residents of Basalt are employed in either Aspen or <br /> <br />Glenwood Springs. Others are employed in ranching, local businesses, <br /> <br />or the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. Tourism is a major factor in <br /> <br />Basalt economy because of proximity to Aspen and also because the <br /> <br />. <br />
