The two major streams

t

in the area are the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan Rivers, the confluence

of which is located in the southeastern part of the town. The Fryingpan

.

flows generally westward from the Continental Divide through Ruedi

Reservoir to Basalt. The Roaring Fork flows generally northwest to

where it joins the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs. Other towns

in the area include Aspen to the south, a well-known resort and tourist-

oriented community, and Glenwood Springs to the'northwest, the present

business center for the area. Carbondale, midway between Basalt and

Glenwood Springs, is predominantly a ranching and mining community.

Many of the residents of Basalt are employed in either Aspen or

Glenwood Springs. Others are employed in ranching, local businesses,

or the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. Tourism is a major factor in

Basalt economy because of proximity to Aspen and also because the

.
