I

I

I

be a health hazard, is well in excess of the Federal and State recommended
limits of 45 mg/l. Recently published proposed standards for public water
supplies by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has placed the limit of
nitrate (as N) at 10 mg/l, which is equivalent to 44.3 mg/l of nitrate (N03).1/

Area to be servedl/

I

I

The area proposed to be served includes approximately 280 square miles

of rural Morgan County as shown on Figure 2. The proposed service area

includes most of the irrigated farms in the county plus the communities of

Goodrich, Orchard, Weldona, Snyder and Hillrose. The towns of Fort Morgan,

Brush and Wiggins have their own water systems and therefore are not included

in the proposed service area.

Details on the estimated population within the service area and the

water requirements are presented in Chapter III,

I

I

I

Proposed system

I

The proposed distribution system consists of approximately 280 miles of

pipeline varying in diameter from 2 to 15 inches. A proposed layout, subject

to final design modifications, is shown in Figure 2. Three storage reser-

voirs are planned to provide peak-flow demands as well as supplies during

breakdowns or other emergencies. Details of the proposed system are pre-

sented in Chapter IV.

I

I

I

The proposed water supply is a ground-water aquifer which lies imme-

diately west of the 1.estern F~rgan County line (Hay Gulch alluvium). An

alternate ground-water supply near the eastern Morgan County boundary (Camp

Creek alluvium) can be used to supplement the western supply, if needed,

Details about these water supplies are presented in Chapter III and in

Appendix A.

I

I

I

I

lIInterim Primary Drinking Water Standards, Federal Register for Dec. 24,
1975, Section 141.11.

l/Because of uncertainties in timing and influence on the service area and
costs of this project as may be imposed by the construction of the Narrows
Reservoir, the Morgan County Quality Water Association requested that a
feasibility study be first prepared assuming no reservoir.

I

'I

I

- 2-

M.
