.

SECTION II
GENERAL INFORMATION

SITE

Carbondale is an incorporated Town in Garfield County, Colorado. The Town

site is located just above the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Crystal

Rivers. Carbondale.s approximately twelve miles southeast of Glenwood

Springs, Colorado, and thi rty miles northwest of Aspen, Colorado. Highway

133 passes along the west boundary of the Town, and Highway 82 is to the

north of the Town site. The area within the present Town boundaries is

317 acres and is situated on a bench just above the geological flood plain

of both the Roaring Fork and Crystal Rivers. The terrain is fairly level

within the present corporate limits. Carbondale is served by the Denver and

Rio Grande Railroad Line and has excellent all-weather access via Highway

82 and 133. Drawing 1 ill ustrates the Carbondale locale.

CLI MATE

.

The climate in the Carbondale area is similar to other mountainous areas in

the Colorado Rockies, being continental in character, and temperature

changes are often sudden and extreme. The elevation at Carbondale is 6,170

feet. No weather station has been set up in Carbondale itself, but stations

have been operated in both Basalt and Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Carbondale

is midway both geographically and elevation-wise between these two stations.

Table I I-A lists the weather record, for both Basalt and Glenwood Springs.

TABLE II-A
WI ATHER RECORDINGS

Ave rage Avg.
