VI-8

.

The Insurance Services Office (ISO) relates the, degree of protection af-

forded an area to a classification. Classifications vary from I (excellent)

to 10 (poor); an additional classification exists for unprotected property.

Table VI-H shows the relative classes of fire protection systems as deter-

mined by deficiency points:

The level of protection afforded to a community is chosen as a balance be-

tween savings in insurance premiums and the cost of providing a sufficient

amount of equipment and services (listed in Table V~G) to provide the class-

ification resulting in a reduction in fire insurance rates. Another signifi-

cant factor is reduction in fire losses due to better fire protection in

lower insurance classifications. To get a low rating, all factors listed

in Table VI-G must be considered.

.

Experience shows that most communities cannot afford all of the water facil-

ities, fire equipment, and manpower to receive low ratings. In Colorado,

Classes 7 and 8 have the same insurance premium, Classes 5 and 6 have the

same inSurance premium, and Classes 1 - 4 have the same insurance premium.

The biggest reduction in insurance premiums (40% to 50%) occurs between

Class 9 and Classes 7 - 8. A reduction 10 - 15% in insurance premiums can

be expected by a reduction in rating from Classes 7 8 to C13sses 5 - 6.

Normally, a community such as Carbondale falls into a Class 7 - 8 rating.

Carbondale's present fire I.rotection classification is Class 9. Table

VI-H lists the classes in ,elation to the deficiency points.

Key items in fi -e protection water supply are:

1. Storage
2. Rate of Wate r Supp I y
3. Distribution
4. Fi re Hydrant Spacing

.
