I 11- 3

.

mi Ie aboV<' the confluence with the Crystal River. Water was carried to

Town via a six-inch wood stave pipeline, approximately eight miles long.

The long transmission line connected directly into a distribution system

.hich consisted of wood stave pipe installed in the Town streets.

Around 1920, an eight- inch wood stave pipeline was extended from the end of

,he six-inch pipeline up Nettle Creek to the point where Nettle Creek goes

underground. This was necessary to prevent the collection of muddy water

during spring runoff.

The wood pipelines were maintained and kept operable until 1935 when the

ent; re distribution pipe system was replaced as a PWA project with cast-

iron pipe, and the first three miles at the Town end of the transmission

line was replaced with an eight-inch steel line. Later, the remainder of

the transmission line was replaced in segments with eight-inch steel pipe.

.

A 250,000 gallon storage tank was added to the system to provide additional

fi re protection and to take care of hourly variations in water consumption

in excess of the rate of inflow. The tank was constructed of concrete and

is located on White Hill with a high water elevation of 6,331 feet.

Deteriorization of the steel transmission line became apparent in the 1960's,

and in 1963, the upper half of the line was replaced with a ten-inch cast-

Iron 1 ine. As the same time, a chlorinator .tation was added as a requi re-

ment of the State Health Department. This project included approximately

17,000 linear feet of pipeline, beginning at the present chlorinator building

and extending up to a headwall on the South Fork of Nettle Creek, picking up

two lower spring boxes. A pump operated chlorinator and chlorinator housing

were installed as part of this project; however, the chlorinator was in-

operable.

The lower half of the transmission line was replaced in 1965. There were
approximately 23,500 linear feet of 10-inch cast-iron pipe installed with
this project, extending from the intersection of Third and Sopris Streets

.
