,

.

RIO GRANDE WATER SUPPLY STUDY - PHASE I - STEP TWO

----------------------------------------------------------------

Task 11-6 preparation and operation of RIBS 1M computer model to
estimate storable flows at four potential storage sites
under several assumptions.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Purpose: To revise and operate the RIBSIM computer model of the
Rio Grande Basin to reflect changes to study
assumptions from Tasks II-I, 11-2, 11-3, and II-50

Approach: The complexity of the Rio Grande Basin dictates the use
of a computer model for water availability studies.
The RIBSIM computer model was prepared and calibrated
for the Step One water availability simulations of the
Rio Grande Basin and is an appropriate tool for
investigating the effect of alternative water supplies
and demands on available flow. Activities include:

1. LRCWE will combine the model refinements from Task
II-I, 11-2, 11-3 and 11-5 into a single model and
test for proper operation of each refinement. If
necessary, revisions will be made such that the
refinements operate correctly together.

2.

LRCWE will operate the model and
storable flows for each of the
scenarios:

determine
following

Case A:

Case B:

Case C:

June 17, 1988

This is the base scenario for the Rio Grande
Basin excluding the Closed Basin proj ect.
This scenario is similar to the base scenario
used in Step One of the study but includes
model refinements made in Tasks II-I, 11-3
and 11-5. The Rio Grande Project Demand will
be operated at the 650,000 af/year in this
scenario. This scenario is included for
comparison purposes with the other scenarios 0

The first Closed Basin Project scenario (from
Task II-2) will be superimposed on the base
scenario (Case A). Comparison of the results
of this Case with Case A will allow
determinations of the effect of a Closed
Basin operating scenario on storable flows.

The second Closed Basin Project scenario
(from Task 11-2) will be superimposed on the
base scenario (Case A) 0 Comparison of the
results of this Case with Case A will allow
determinations of the effect of an

14

ct> Leonard Rice Consulting Waier Engineers, lnc,
