f,
I

I

.

Task No.5

DETERMINATION OF POTENTIAL WATER STORAGE SITES

Purpose: The physical and legal water availability will
differ with various potential storage siteso Therefore, it
becomes necessary to identify potential storage sites prior
to storable flow analyses. Two potential sites on the Rio
Grande upstream of Goose Creek were identified in the study's
Request for Proposal and two others remain to be identified
in Task 5. One of the sites to be identified is on the
mainstem of the Rio Grande downstream of the confluence with
Goose Creek and upstream of the confl uence with the South
Fork of the Rio Grande. The other site to be identified is
on the South Fork of the Rio Grande upstream of the confluence
with Beaver Creek.

Approach:

1, County maps (1:50000 scale) of the two reaches where the
storage sites are to be identified will be acquired and
used for a visual layout of possible dam sites. Data
from the USBR and others will also be used in locating
potential dam sites. Up to three potential dam sites
in each reach will be identified with information
summarized such as location, bottom elevation, maximum
dimensions and estimated capacities. No field work
(i.e. drilling) is envisioned for this study.
2. Within each reach and between the potential storage
sites, major tributaries or \,ater rights which could affect
physical or legal water availability will be identifiedo
30 Information coll ected in steps 1 and 2 will be discussed
with the study sponsors in selecting one potential
storage site within each reach for the storable flow
analysis.

Work Product: A draft task summary memorandum describing the
reaches under investigation for potential storage projects,
the visual layout of several potential sites in each reach,
the existing water supply and demand components within the
reaches and between potential sites which may affect water
availability will be provided to study sponsors and the USBR
for reviewo Discussion of the selection of the two additional
sites to be included in the analyses will be made in the
final of the task summary memorandum.

13

~ Leonard Rice Consulting Waler Engineers, lnc,
