.

CHAnER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

Project Setting

The Basut Project area is in the beautiful Roaring Fork Valley
nestled in the heart of the Rockies in west-central Colorado. The val-
ley is a part of the Upper Colorado River Basin and lies south of the
Colorado River between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. The project area
includes parts of three counties--Garfield, Eagle, and Pitkin--and two
incorporated towns--Basalt and Carbondale. Basalt is at the confluence
of the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan Rivers with Carbondale a few miles
downstream at the junction of the Roaring Fork and Crystal Rivers. El
Jebe1 is a small comIllunity at a crossroads between Basalt and Carbondale.
The area is easily accessible to Denver and other metropolitan centers,
with Denver less than 160 highway miles east of Glenwood Springs.

.

The world-renowned ski slopes of Aspen and Snowmass adjacent to the
project area. have a magnetic influence on winter sports enthusiasts.
The close proximity of the White River National Forest, aesthetic values
of the Roaring Fork Valley, and the Ruedi Reservoir on the Fryingpan River
above BasaJ.t combine to make the area an attractive summer recreation area
and help establish it as an all-season ,~ecreation mecca.

.

One of the fast growing residential develo:pments along the
Roaring Fork below Aapen.

4
