I
11
il
II
II
II
1I
II
II

As the area served by the City water system can be broken down into two separate

parts, a population projection will be developed first for Canon City and

secondly for the outside water districts and users served by the City water

system. 1971 will be used as the present year in determining present water

usage figures; therefore, in the population discussions 1971 will be taken as

the present year.

Canon City. To develop a basis for a population projection for Canon City, it
is necessary to arrive at a present population figure. U.S. Census Bureau
figures indicate that Canon City had a population in 1970 of 9,206. There are
a number of methods to arrive at a present population figure. The ratio of
the census population to the number of children in schools, the number of
telephone services, or the number of customer power accounts in the census year
can be applied to the same items in the present year to obtain a present
population figure. The number of neW residential building permits since the
census year can be used to determine present population; a ratio of 3.5 persons
per residence will be used. Using these methods the following figures for the
1971 population were obtained:

II

Number of.Children in Schools:

II

Number of Telephone Accounts:

Number of Power Accounts:

II

Building Permits:

II

9206 x 3260 = 9297
3i28
9206 x 5724 = 9515
S538
9.206 x 2915 = 9422
2848
9206 + (3.5 x 29) = 9308

The 1971 population of Canon City will be taken as 9350.

II

The past pattern of growth for Canon City was taken from U.S. Census Bureau

information. The following is a record of the population history for Canon City.

The population for South Canon was i~cluded in these figures from 1910 through

1950. South Canon was annexed by Ca~on City between 1950 and 1960,

rl

[I
II
[J
'1

Year
1910
1920
1930
1940
1950
1960
1970
Iq71

Population
6483
5832
7409
8419
7933
8973
9206
13)~70
lJ2

,.
