il
II
II
II
II
II
~
II
II
II
II

On a cursory inspection of this se5ment of line conducted in August, 1972,

approximately 25 leaks were observed most of which were small but one was

sizeable amounting to 2-300 gpm (See Exhibit No.5, page 2). Approximately

60% of this 3.4 mile segment is exposed and suceptable to damage by rock

slides. The City estimates 5-6 breaks in the line per year are caused by

rock slides. On this segment of line there are over 30 trestles varying in

length from 10' to 1600'. The majority of these trestles are wooden, but

there are a small number of steel truss trestles. Over half of these trestles

are in poor condition and in need of repair. Exhibit No. 5 shows the

precarious nature of this wooden line. During the summer months the City

carries out a continuous maintenance program on this segment of line.

If this raw water transmission line is to be used on a continuing basis in

the future, it has been estimated that 1 1/2 miles of this wooden line will

have to be replaced over the next 20 years.

The capacity of this raw water line is 11.3 mgd which is sufficient to
supply the maximum day demand throu~h 1975 and the average day of the peak
month through 1982.

II

The existing pump station can operate satisfactorily as presently installed

during the summer months but during the winter months the Hydraulic Ditch

must be kept free of ice to provide a water source to the pump station.

The only time the pump station woulJ be required to operate during the winter

would be during emergencies when the raw water line was out of operation.

II

I

The existing pump station can be used in conjunction with the raw water

transmission line to supply the treatment plant. The present pump station

capacity of 10.6 mgd plus the raw water line capacity of 11.3 mgd totals

21.9 mgd. The combined capacity is sufficient to handle the maximum day demand

through 1994 and the raw water line would be capable of handling the total

demand by itself except during the three summer months of high demand. On

the other hand, if the raw water line becomes inoperative for any reason, the

pump station must be capable of handling the maximum day demand by itself.

The existing pump station capacity of 10.6 mgd is sufficient to handle the

maximum day demand through only 1974. To handle the 1993 maximum day demand

of 21.5 mgd the pump station would have to be expanded by 10.9 mgd.

II

rl

J

1

1

3-3
