I
II
II
II
II
II
II
II
II

SECTION 3
RAW WAtER SUPPLY

General.

This section will deal with the me,hod of supplying raw water to the

water treatment plant. The existi~g facilities will be briefly described,

then the adequacy of these existing facilities will be discussed along with

improvements that will be required if the facilities are to be used on a

continuing ba~s in the future.

To facilitate the comparison of the continued use of the present method of

supplying raw water with an alternate of pumping all raw water to the

treatment plant, operation and maintenance costs and capital expenditures will

be developed for continuing to use the present facilities. These costs will

then be reduced to an equivalent annual cost over the next 20 years.

II

For the alternate of pumping all the raw water this same information will

be developed and a comparison can then be made on the two alternate methods

of providing a raw water supply to the treatment plant.

II

[I

Finally, the adequacy of the City's water rights with respect to future demand
will be investigated.

II

Description of Existing Facilities.

rl

Canon City's source of raw water is the Arkansas River. Intake facilities
are located in the Royal Gorge and ~ater is normally fed by gravity to the
treatment plant through a 30" woodell and steel transmission line 7 miles
long. A pump station located below the treatment plant can also supply the
plant and is used as a standby when problems occur with the intake facilities
or transmission line.

II

II
]
J
J

The original intake facilities were constructed in approximately 1908 and
modified in 1931. They consist of ~ dam and inlet basin connected to initial
sand settling basins by appr~ximateJ.y 600 feet of 40" steel pipeline.

3~1
