Storage tanks are tied

into the distribution system at critical locations so that during periods

when the rate of demand is less than the supply the tank will fill. Also

when the demand is greater than the supply, the water will flow from the

tanks into the distribution system. Equalizing storage in the amount of

25% of the maximum day consumption would be sufficient. In 1993 based on

the more optimistic population projection (Case 2) equalizing storage in the

amount of 21.5 mg = 5.4 mg would be required.

4

Fire Storage.

As was discussed previously, the required fire flow for downtown Canon City
in 1993 would be 4,000 gpm for a du~ation of 5 hours and for residential
areas 1500 gpm for 2 hours. To pro~ide the more critical fire flow for the
downtown area fire storage in the a~ount of 4000 (60) (5) = 1.2 mg would be
required.

Storage Size.

The total storage requirements for Canon City and the surrounding area in 1993

were based on all of the above factors and on the assumption that sufficient

storage should be available to provide a minimum of one day's maximum demand

in case of emergencies.

It is recommended that by 1993 a total storage of 21.5 mg be available to

Canon City and surrounding area. Tbe time frame for construction of the

additional storage required is covered in Section 5 and 6 that follow.

2-7
