.

CHAPTER II

COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

Crops and types of farms

Nearly all the lands of the Juniper project area are presently in an
undeveloped state and are sparsely covered with native brushes and grasses.

.

Juniper project lands on Deadman Bench along the east banK of
Red Wash.

The production of beef cattle. sheep, and dairy products would be the
chief agricultural enterprise throughout the project area after proj-
ect development. Climatic conditions would permit some diversification
in crop production. In the upper portion of the project area in the
Maybell-Sunbeam area alfalfa, pasture, and small grains for feed would
be the principal crops. In lands at lower elevations in the western
portion of the project area cash crops such as dry beans, sugar beets,
and perhaps some fruit would be of importance. The table below shows
the range of yields of crops basic to the anticipated livestock economy
expected to be attained by the end of the project development period.

Crop
Alfalfa hay
Rotation pasture
Barley
Oats

Estimated crop
yields per acre
3 to 3.5 tons
5 to 7.0 A.U.M.
50 to 60 bu.
55 to 70 bu.

.

45
