.

CHAPTER II

COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

Artesia Canal

Artesia Canal. heading at the end of the outlet tunnel from the
Artesia Reservoir, would vary in capacity from 370 to 70 second-feet.
The Artesia Canal would be about 9 miles long and would consist mostly
of earth section.

Wonsits Canal

The Wonsits Canal would head at an elevation of 4,850 feet on Red
Wash that drains most of the project lands :on Deadman Bench. The canal
would have an initial capacity of 155 second-feet and a terminal capac-
ity of i5 second-feet. It would be about 14 miles long and would con-
sist mostly of earth section. A diversion dam would be required at the
head of the canal.

Savannah Butte Canal

Savannah Butte Canal would vary in capacity from 60 to 10 second-
feet and would be about 15 miles in length. It would consist almost
entirely of earth section. The diversion dam at the head of the canal
on the White River would be a concrete weir.

.

Laterals and drains

Lateral systems in the Maybell-Sunbeam area would be short and of
fairly simple construction while those 'west of Elk Springs would be long
and expensive to construct because of the rough terrain that would be
traversed. An extensive system of deep drains would be required to make
lands in the area suitable for irrigation. Drainage requirements would
be particularly heavy west of Elk Springs.

Juniper'powerplant and switchyard

The Juniper powerplant would be constructed at the toe of Juniper
Dam and would be remote controlled from the power operations center at
Montrose, Colo. The plant would have an installed generating capacity of
30,000 kilowatts. The plant would operate under static heads ranging from
164 to 205 feet. The penstock to the powerplant would be a welded steel
pipe approximately 700 feet long with an inside diameter of about 14 feet.
It would have a capacity of about 2,700 second-feet. A switchyard with
associated transformation equipment necessary to interconnect with the
nearby Colorado River Storage project transmission system would be installed
near the powerplant.

.

23
