.

CHAPTER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

Previous Investigations

Reconnaissance investigations of possible water resource developments
in the vicinity of the Juniper project area were started by the Bureau of
Reclamation in the early 1900's. In 1904 the Juniper site on the Yampa
River was surveyed and suggested as a possiple storage site. In 1914 and
1915 topographic surveys were made at the site and three holes were drilled
to determine foundation conditions. In 1923 a reconnaissance investigation
was made of an irrigation development for Deadman Bench wtth storage pro-
vided at the Juniper site. It was proposed to divert water from a reser-
voir at the site 115 feet above low water level of the river and convey it
to Deadman Bench through a series of tunnels and canals. This development
was found to be infeasible. The early investigations of the Bureau are
aummarized in Water Supply Paper 618 of the Geological Survey.

Several plans for the Juniper project area were briefly outlined in
the Bureau of Reclamation report of 1946, entitled "The Colorado River,"
which inventoried potential projects in the Colorado River Basin. The
Deadman Bench project plan included a dam and reservoir at the Juniper
site on the Yampa River with a plant for generation of hydroelectric power
at the base of the dam. A canal would divert irrigation water from the
reservoir 120 feet above streambed and carry the water to Deadman Bench.

.

.

Looking northwest at lands in the lower Deadman Bench
area about 8 miles northwest of Bonanza, Utah.

12
