WASTEWATER SYSTEM

Treatment Alternatives

Three alternative wastewater treatment methods have been identified.

They are listed below and evaluated in this section.

1. Continue to use individual septic systems.

2. Contract for treatment service with the Perry Park Water
and Sanitation District.

3. Join with the Colorado Depa~tment of Highways in constructing
a treatment facility for both Highway rest areas on 125 and
for Larkspur,

Alternative I is a "do-nothing" option. The construction of a community

water supply system will eliminate tpe potential danger of individual septic

systems contaminating the existing spallow wells. The problems associated

with a multitude of closely spaced septic systems in an area with a high ground

water table will not be alleviated by this alternative. Some residences in

Larkspur are reported to have seriouS operational problems with their existing

septic systems and a number of the systems are currently discharging directly

from the septic tank to Plum Creek. The result is pollution of the surface

water and creation of a health hazard.

Construction of any new dwellin~s or business places in the town will be

limited by the lack of a community w~stewater system.

If either of the other alternatives are financially feasible, this "do

nothing" alternative should be eliminated.

Alternative 2 consists of entering into a contract with the Perry Park

Water and Sanitation District for the treatment of Larkspur's wastewater at

the District's existing Sage Port treatment plant. The location of the plant,

two miles north of Larkspur, is shown on Map I at the rear of this report.

28
