Having traversed

through some six (6) miles of open ditch, the physical and bacteriological

characteristics of the water have changed greatly.

Leaving the reservoirs, the water passes through a wooden structure

to a !2,500 gallon concrete wet well. The wooden structure contains an

electronically controlled valve together with a by-pass device. Low and

high water probes in the concrete wet well allow control of the water in the

reservoirs. From the wet well the water flows through a buried 6" diameter

pipeline to a chlorination structure._ After. being chlorinate~, the "water"

continues through the buried 6" diameter pipeline to the Town. (Note: This

does not allow proper detention time according to State Health Standards).

The distribution system within the Town's service area is a "hodge-podge" of

POly-Vinyl Chloride (PVC), tuberculated and deteriorating steel, cast-iron

and galvanized water lines. Sizes range from 6" diameter to 2" diameter.

Constructive efforts have been made to replace the older lines with plastic

(PVC) pipe. Monies from the general and water fund are allocated to this

purpose. However, because of limited funding, the overall replacement of the

system would be an impossibility.
Service lines in the Town are one-half inch (~f1) diameter on most

commercial business and residential homes. No meters are in use. Service

lines are not consistent in usage of corporation stops at the mains, but most

do have curb stops at the property line.

Fire hydrants are randomly located in Town and are of an "odd ball"

size. Most have two and one-half inch (2~") diameter throats. Static pressure

is approximately 60 psi, but dynamic head decreases rapidly to !20 psi.

5
