Their present source

of supply is two wells on the west bank of the Dolores River. During

the summer and fall when the Dolores River is completely diverted

by upstream water rights which are senior to the water rights

of the Town of Dove Creek, the yield from this well source is

insufficient to meet the requirements of the Town. As a result

water uses have to be limited to strictly household use. All lawn

watering, car washing, and other outside use is curtailed.

In
the

1970,
light

the Town replaced their high pressure pump station.

weight steel high pressure supply line in the

Also

canyon was replaced with a cement-mortar lined ductile iron and

asbestos cement supply line. The old line had developed as many

as 72 leaks a week. The distribution system is being improved

and is in need of considerable upgrading such as additional valves,

looping of dead end lines, placing additional fire hydrants, stan-

dardization of meter settings, and installation of remote readers on

the meters so they can be read in the winter months. At the present

time the valve arrangement is such that in order to fix a leak

in the system, at least one-fifth of the Town has to be shut

off.

I - 7
