PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE

of organic wastes is essential to maintenance of a healthful environment.
In general, soil conditions in the project area are favorable for the
installation and operation of individual water-carried, sewage disposal
systems. In some isolated areas the heavy-textured soils having a low
permeability require special attention in the desien and construction of
subsurface sewage disposal systems. The 10caI health department or the
State Department of Public Health should be consulted regarding require-
ments for individual sewage disposal systems. Precautionary measures
must be taken to exclude organic pollution from the project canals,
drains. ditches, and reservoirs.

Local Health Services

The San Juan Basin Health Unit l1ith headquarters in Durango, Colo-
rado, provides local health services in Dolores County; the Montezuma
County area is provided local health services by the County Heslth Depart-
ment with headquarters in Cortez, Colorado. Dolores and Montezuma Coun-
ties also receive supplementary public health services from the Colorado
State Department of Public Health.

Project development will improve the local economy and increase the
opportunity for the residents to enjoy a higher standard of living. Some
of the more important factors in creating a healthful environment include
the development of sefe end emple water supplies. proper waste disposal
facilities, and insect and rodent control measures.

Construction Phase of Project

Limited housing accommodations are available in the vicinity of the
construction site to serve the contractors' employees during the con-
struction phase of the project. Under these conditions a temporary con-
struction camp may be necessary. A sanitary survey of all proposed
construction campsites by the State Department of Public Health or the
Public Health Service would be desirable to assist in solving of prob-
lems which may have public health significance. Undoubtedly, some hous-
ing could be obtained at Cortez or Durango. Colorado.

Adequate sanitary facilities and a potable water supply to serve
temporary camps and permanent housing should be included with construc-
tion plans.

Recreational Development

Water-based recreational activities frequently follow development
of water storage reservoirs; sites for cauT,ing. picnickin[, boating
ramps, and swimming are frequently spontaneous. Their occurrence neces-
sitates the need for adequate sanitary facilities and safety measures to
protect against health hazards.

128
