PUBLIC HEALTH SEP.VICE

2. ,fuere the effluent of sewerage systems or trade wastes are dis-
charged into a stream, lake, or other body of water utilized as
a surface source of public water supply, the dissolved or sus-
pended matter in the effluent or trade waste shall not exceed
thirty parts per million "hen measured in terms of five-day
twenty degree, Centigrade. Biochemical Oxygen Demand test.

3. The coliform count in effluents of sewerage systems shall not
average more than one thousand per milliliter. such average
being based upon at least four samples taken at the rate of at
least one sample per day over a 4-day consecutive period.

Sewage Disposal

...',j

The existing Dolores sewage treatment facilities consist of a 3-
compartment septic tenk discharging to a series of lagoons with sub-
sequent discharge to the Dolores River below the existing Cortez water
supply turnout. These facilities are located within the proposed McPhee
Reservoir area. Under the potential project plans the Bureau of Recla-
mation has included construction of new sewage treatment facilities for
the town of Dolores. The effluent from these facilities will be pumped
into the upper end of McPhee Reservoir. As the waters stored in the
McPhee Reservoir will be utilized for domestic purposes. the sewage
treatment plant for Dolores should include secondary treatment facilities
and disinfection of the effluent prior to discharging the effluent into
the reservoir. The disinfected sewage effluent should be discharged into
the reservoir as far as possible below the Montezuma Tunnel. preferably
one mile. Upon abandoning the old sewage treatment facilities all
accumulated sewage solids should be removed from the reservoir area.

Domestic wastes from Cortez receive primary treatment in an Imhoff
tank prior to discharging into McElmo Creek. Inadequately treated sewage
introduces a potential public hazard to the irrigators downstream on
McElmo Creek. Return flows from irrigated lands in the Montezuma Valley,
plus the sewage effluent from Cortez, is used to irrigate about 1.600
acreS of land in McElmo Creek Canyon. Wastes from residential and indus-
trial areas surrounding Cortez are discharged into waste stabilization
ponds. A total of 6 waste stabilization ponds having a total surface
area of 25 acres are utilized--3 ponds are located in the northeast area.
1 pond in the southeast area, and 2 ponds in the southwest area.

The domestic wastes from Dove Creek are discharged to newly con-
structed waste stabilization lagoons.

In general the individual farm homes are equipped "ith modern plumb-
ing and practice subsurface disposal of waste waters. It is estimated
that about 20% of the farm homes do not have satisfactory waste dispOSal
systems. Installation of modern sanitary facilities for proper disposal

127
