GENERAL <br />The Town of Boone is a small community of approximately 456 <br />people located in Pueblo County, Colorado, approximately 22 <br />miles east of the City of Pueblo. The Town is bisected and <br />served by State Highway 96 and the Missouri Pacific Railroad <br />which parallel each other. The Town's corporate limits en- <br />compass approximately 400 acres. Boone is primarily residen- <br />tial in nature with a few business establishments located <br />along Highway 96. <br /> <br />The majority of the Town's residences are retired persons. <br />According to the Pueblo Human Resources Commission approxi- <br />mately 8% of the population are over 65 years of age. <br />Approximately 19% are receiving Social Security, 39% are <br />receiving other Public Assistance and 36% are below the <br />poverty level. The individuals who are employed, for the <br />most part commute to the Pueblo Army Depot. The remainder <br />commute to Pueblo. <br /> <br />A nursing home situated in Town houses approximately 30 <br />persons. In addition, the Town is planning to approve con- <br />struction of a 12 dwelling unit complex for elderly housing <br />to be located along First Street between College Avenue and <br />Russel Avenue. This development project is awaiting the <br />various improvements required in the water system. Currently, <br />the Town has in the planning stages, a housing development <br />for low income families to be located on its northern boundary. <br />Recent public hearings held by an advisory committee appointed <br />by the Town Council determined that the immediate community <br />needs order of priority are: <br /> <br />-1- <br />
