Many of
the existing water mains are not looped and thus contri-
bute to the pressure problems. In addition, the existing
fire hydrant installations do not meet with the recommen-
dations of the National Board of Fire Underwriters and
state requirements. It is noted that adequate fire pro-
tection cannot be provided to the existing elementary
school and other public buildings.

Boone has a volunteer fire department. Recently, Boone
acquired a new pumper truck and is planning to purchase
a tank truck for fighting rural and brush fires. At this
time the pumper truck is not effective due to the deficien-
cy in the distribution system and lack of fire hydrants.

Funding for constructioh of the 1980 water system facili-
ties was provided by the Department of Housing and Urban
Development (H.U.D.) and in part by revenue sharing funds.

4. PROPOSED WATER SYSTEM FACILITIES

A. Water Supply

No additional improvements to the water supply facilities

are recommended at this time. However, due to the fact

that bids for the construction of the new pumping facili-

ty were in excess of the engineering estimate, insufficient

funds were available to complete the facility. Approximate-

ly $12,000 are still required for the installation of the

new gas chlorination equipment and liquid level control

telemetering equipment between the pump facility and the
200,000 gallon reservoir. This cost will be addressed
further in the financial section of this report.

-6-
