In Table 8 is the estimated National electrical energy require-

ments together with projected populations to the year 1990.

TABLE 8

ESTIMATED NATIONAL ELECTRICAL ENERGY REQUIREMENTS, OUTPUT

Year

Projected Population
(1.1476% Per Year)
(Millions)

Per capita
Requirement**

Annual Requirement
(Million Kw Hours)

1970*
1975
1980
1985
1990

203.235 Persons
212.8
228.9
246.4
265.1

7,536 Kwh/c
9,7 54
11 ,035
12,485
14,126

1,531,609
2,075,600
2,525,912
3,076,326
3,744,704

* Actua 1
** Increase in Per Capita Usage at 2.500% per Year.

This data was compiled by the National Electrical Energy Requirements
based on Congressional Studies of 1973. In this Table the population growth was
projected on a growth rate of 1.1476% per year and an increase in per capital usage
of 2.5% per year. This then, gives an indication of the growth required in the
electrical energy field which constitutes one of the major requirements for energy
production. It should be noted here, also, that coal is presently utilized in
approximately 50% of the steam generating units which in turn'generate 80% approx-
imately of all the electricity produced. Thus, coal is responsible for producing
approximately 40% of all electrical energy.

Let us now concentrate on the figures relating to coal production and

consumption within Colorado as this is more pertinent to the studies at hand. Coal
from Western Colorado is utilized in the production of coke for the steel and
foundry industries, for the production of synthetic gas, in the monufacture of many
hydrocarbon products and as a source of thermal fuel for boilers producing steam

and hot water for heating and manufacturing as well as the production of electricity.

Table 9 shows the total known coal production in the State of Colorado.

-12-
